ClassTag alternative: what to use now that the free tier is gone
If you are searching for a ClassTag alternative, you probably already know why. The free version you had been using since somebody in your building recommended it stopped letting you in, and the product it turned into is not sold to people like you.

What happened to ClassTag
SchoolStatus acquired ClassTag in 2023. On February 1, 2024 the product was renamed SchoolStatus Connect, which a San Angelo ISD notice to families described at the time: "On February 1, 2024, ClassTag will be renamed to SchoolStatus Connect." Existing logins kept working and the change looked cosmetic.
The part that mattered came next. SchoolStatus published a help center article titled "Free, Basic ClassTag is Sunsetting", setting the end of the free tier at June 30, 2024 and the expiry of individual teacher subscriptions at July 1, 2024. Individual classroom subscriptions are no longer offered; schools and districts buy SchoolStatus Connect as an enterprise product.
The domain tells the same story. Visit classtag.com today and it returns a 301 redirect to connect.schoolstatus.com. ClassTag as a thing a teacher or a PTO could sign up for on their own does not exist any more.
Who lost what
It is worth separating the groups, because they need different replacements and most articles on this topic lump them together.
Districts that were paying already lost nothing. SchoolStatus Connect is the same lineage with more behind it, including translation, attendance data, and reporting across schools. If your district bought it, use it, and skip the rest of this page.
Individual teachers on the free tier lost the product outright. There is no paid plan to upgrade to as an individual; the purchase decision moved to the district. If your district has not bought Connect, your classroom communication tool is gone and the replacement is a different category of product.
PTOs and PTAs were never really the customer, which is the part worth being honest about. ClassTag was built for teacher to parent communication at the classroom level. PTOs used it because it was free, present in the building, and parents already had it. When the free tier closed, PTOs lost a tool that was doing a job it was not designed for, and the right replacement is not a smaller version of ClassTag.

Picking a replacement that matches what you lost
The mistake to avoid is replacing a free classroom tool with a paid operations platform because both appear on the same comparison lists. Work out which job you are filling first.
If you are a teacher who needs to reach one classroom
Ask your administration whether the district already has Connect, ParentSquare, or something similar; teachers frequently do not know a district tool exists until they ask. If not, a class specific solution rather than a school platform is the right size. SchoolRelay is built around a parent group rather than a roster, so it fits a homeroom poorly.
If you are a PTO that used ClassTag for announcements
This is the closest match for a public hub. You were using ClassTag to tell families what was happening and when, and that job does not need a classroom roster, a login, or a district contract. If your district already bought SchoolStatus Connect
Use it for district and classroom communication. Then ask what your PTO is actually allowed to publish through it. In most districts the answer involves getting a staff member to send on your behalf, which works until the week they are out. If you need dues, a directory, or a store

What SchoolRelay covers, and what it does not
SchoolRelay gives a parent group one public page holding announcements, an event calendar, volunteer signups with capacity limits and reminder emails, and a school links directory. Parents read it without an account, an app, or an invitation code. The free Community plan has no trial clock, and Pro is $99 per year for email digests, push notifications, analytics, and multiple committee pages.
It does not do the things a district platform is bought for. There is no two way messaging with individual families, no automatic translation, no attendance or student data, and no classroom roster. If you need a teacher to message one parent privately about their child, SchoolRelay is the wrong tool and Connect is the right category.
The honest summary is that SchoolRelay replaces what a PTO was using ClassTag for. It does not replace what a district was using it for, and no free tool will.

What is the best free ClassTag alternative for a PTO?

Our district uses SchoolStatus Connect. Do we still need a PTO page?
Most PTOs in that position do, for the same reason they do under any district platform: the district account belongs to the district. Your fundraiser, your volunteer slots, and your committee pages sit outside what district staff will typically send, and routing every announcement through an employee adds a delay your board does not control. Keeping the district tool for district messages and a PTO page for PTO content is the common arrangement.
